LAKE COMO

Discover the lake

Lake Como is certainly one the most famous and fascinating lakes in the world. International visitors appreciate especially the beautiful scenery, the small villages overlooking the lake, still tied to their old traditions, the surrounding luxuriant landscape and the enchanting gardens belonging to historical villas, that used to be the summer residences of aristocratic families.

Keeping our Hotel Lenno as a base, you can choose among many daily excursions. You should not miss the opportunity to visit the villas of the area and their gardens: Villa Balbianello in Lenno, Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo, Villa Monastero in Varenna and Villa Melzi in Bellagio, just to mention the most famous ones.

Another interesting daily excursion is offered by the visit of the town of Como, leaving Lenno by boat and returning to the hotel in the evening. You can also go up to Brunate, a small centre reachable through a singular funicular railway, and admire the lake from above, or take a brief boat tour visiting the picturesque small villages.

Small and only tip of land above the deep waters of Lake Como, Comacina Island is a green and wooded cliff in an inlet of the western coast of the lake. The stretch of water between the island and the coast, dotted with the sails and masts of the boats moored in peaceful waters, is always been known as Zoca de l’Oli: calm and smooth waters like the oil that is still home-made from the olive trees grown on the area. For its historical relevance, its important archeological remains, its landscape and tourism value, the glamour and appeal of Sagra di San Giovanni – a traditional early-summer feast, the island represents an essential and significant halt in your visit to lake Como.

The various parts of the Sanctuary were built at different times, starting with the 16th century main building. It is located 400 meters above sea level in the town of Ossuccio, with a fabolous view of the center of the lake. The famous Viale delle Cappelle leads to the Santuario.

Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo is a place of rare beauty, where masterpieces of nature and art live together in perfect harmony in over 70.000 square metres of gardens and museum.
The beautiful villa was built at the end of XVII century by the marquis Giorgio Clerici Sommariva’s heirs sold the villa in 1843 to Princess Marianne of Nassau, Albert’s of Prussia wife, who gave it as a present to her daughter Carlotta in occasion of her wedding with Georg II of Saxen-Meiningen. Very fond in botanic, Georg enriched the park, today of great historical and environmental value.

Few places are as romantic as Lake Como, and even fewer resorts as beautiful as Bellagio. Called the “Pearl of the Lake”, Bellagio’s world class hotels and restaurants provide the perfect place to plunge into the lake’s famous panorama. The village is characterised by centuries-old buildings, stone lanes and picturesque cobbled stairways filled with shops showcasing the finest Italian wares.
Villa Melzi is one of the most famous villas on lake Como. It was conceived as a summer home in a neoclassical style typical of the first decades of the XVIII century. The architect Giocondo Albertolli planned it for Francesco Melzi d’Eril, vice president of the Italian Republic and great friend of Napoleon.
A perfect example of neoclassical style, Villa Melzi is surrounded by enchanting gardens with century-old rare and exotic trees and classical statues. The Villa and its gardens, today a national monument, are privately-owned but partially open to the public.
Open from March to October.

Varenna is situated at the feet of a rocky promontory dominating the centre of the Lake Como, above which sits an ancient castle.
The town, whose origins date back to Roman times, has a few signs of its medieval past: the church of S. Giovanni Battista (X-XI cent.), the church S.Giorgio (XII cent.). Near the lake, you can visit the beautiful Villa Monastero and Villa Cipressi.
The river Fiumelatte entered the Guiness Records: it is the shortest Italian river, only 250-m long and it runs only for six months a year.
Villa Monastero, in Varenna on the shore of Lake Como, represents one of the most interesting eclectic-style residences, a beautiful villa with a garden of great scenic impact. Villa Monastero was actually born from the continual restoration of the ancient Cistercian monastery dating from around 1208. Restoration works and repairs have added functional and decorative elements without destroying the traces of the building’s vicissitudes.
The garden represents probably the most famous attraction of Villa Monastero.
It is a real botanical garden along the eastern lakeside, on the coast that goes from Varenna to Fiumelatte. The garden is particularly interesting both for its historical value and for the richness and variety of plants, offering relax and wonderful views on the lake to visitors.
Open from March to November.
